We’re pleased to extend a warm Portland welcome to our newest member of the team, Deighton Small who joins us as our Graduate Structural Engineer.

Deighton joins with an outstanding academic background, graduating with a PhD in Civil Engineering from Northumbria University.  During his doctorate studies he gained experience on work placement, providing structural work on residential properties and the design of retaining walls & foundations.   In his time with us, he has demonstrated excellent technical knowledge and ability, supporting the team on significant projects within the office, helping our structures team with designing various elements on a range of new buildings and refurbishments, along with structural assessments and temporary works checks. Notable examples, include performing a structural analysis of an existing building ahead of a refurbishment project and performing a feasibility investigation on proposed plans to install solar photovoltaic panels.

Deighton worked as an Academic Assistant with the university, helping to support undergraduate students as a main point of contact for lectures and seminars.   As part of this role, he planned, wrote and led lectures and seminars alongside setting up additional support sessions.  Deighton’s clear passion for educating and nurturing the next generation of civil and structural engineers aligns with our own values and as such, we’re supporting him so that he can continue his brilliant work.   Alongside his work in the design office, Deighton dedicates one day a week lecturing at Northumbria University.

Deighton commented: “I’m excited to join the team and truly grateful for the support I’ve already received. I look forward to working together and contributing to the success of Portland!”

Managing Director Lee Barr said: “We are thrilled to welcome Deighton to the team. His exceptional academic background and practical experience will undoubtedly contribute to our continued success. We look forward to seeing the positive impact he’ll make as part of the Portland family”.
